Why we chose iron

We started in a small New Jersey workshop, drawn to the weight of cast iron and the way it ages. It is a dense, heavy-duty metal, and it takes daily use without warping. Every hook, ring, ashtray and holder in our catalog is cast iron, then finished by hand, so the hammered or distressed texture lands a little differently on each one. No two come out alike. These are things you reach for every morning, and that is most of why we care what they are made of.

How a casting is made

Sand casting has been in use for thousands of years, and the six steps have not changed much. This is the process our pieces come out of.

01 The pattern

A replica of the finished piece, machined or carved about one percent oversize. Iron shrinks as it cools, so the pattern runs large on purpose.

02 The sand mold

The pattern is pressed into green sand — silica, clay and water — then lifted out. The hollow it leaves behind is the piece.

03 Melting the charge

An induction furnace takes pig iron and recycled scrap past 2,600°F. A 22,000-pound charge turns liquid in about 45 minutes.

04 The pour

Iron travels from furnace to ladle to mold, glowing orange-white and throwing off radiant heat. Everything before this step exists to hold that shape.

05 Shakeout and cleaning

The mold cools. A vibrating conveyor shakes the sand loose, gates and risers are cut off, and steel shot strips the surface clean.

06 Grinding and checking

Parting lines are ground back by hand. Then every casting is checked, one at a time, for cracks, voids and dimension.

What most people want to know before their first cast iron piece.

Cast iron can develop rust if it is exposed to prolonged moisture, though the material itself is extremely durable. Wipe pieces with a dry or slightly damp cloth and keep them away from excess moisture and harsh chemicals; used outdoors, they hold up best in a covered area protected from rain and humidity.

Not exactly — each piece varies slightly in texture, color and finish because of the natural casting and hand-finishing process. On pieces with a hammered finish, that texture is applied by hand, so no two come out identical. These small differences are normal for cast iron decor, not defects.

Mounting hardware is included with the wall-mounted hooks, towel rings, towel bars and most toilet paper holders, so installation is quick; the freestanding toilet paper holder needs no hardware since it doesn't mount to a wall. Screw-in styles are the exception: they must be installed directly into a wooden surface — a beam, a stud or a piece of furniture — rather than into drywall.

Only the wall-mount pulley carries a published rating: up to 15 lbs when properly installed into a wall stud using suitable hardware. The hooks, towel rings and towel bars are solid cast iron built to hold substantial weight — coats, bags, full-size bath towels — and each comes with the mounting hardware needed for a secure installation.

Orders are processed within 1-2 business days, and delivery typically takes 1-5 business days after shipping, depending on your location. Standard shipping is free on orders over $29 within the United States; below that, the cost is calculated at checkout. A tracking number is emailed as soon as the order ships.

You have 30 days after receiving your item to request a return. The piece must be unused, in its original packaging, with tags and proof of purchase; email info@rusticstate.com to start the return. Once it is accepted, a return shipping label is sent, and approved refunds go back to your original payment method within 10 business days.
